What it does

BMI is weight divided by height squared. It is a quick screening number used by doctors worldwide, but it does not measure body fat directly and can mislead for very muscular people, older adults and some ethnic groups.

How to use it

  1. Choose metric or US units.
  2. Enter weight and height.
  3. Read your BMI, category and healthy range.

Example

70 kg at 175 cm gives a BMI of 22.9. Select Try an example above to see it.

When it helps

  • A quick health check.
  • Tracking progress over months.
  • Understanding a doctor’s comment.
