What it does

Hashes let you compare values without revealing them and check that text has not changed. This tool hashes the UTF-8 bytes of your input with the browser’s built in, audited Web Crypto implementation.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste text.
  2. All four digests are calculated as you type.
  3. Copy the hex digest you need.

Example

SHA-256 of "abc" is ba7816bf…f20015ad, the standard NIST test vector. Select Try an example above to see it.

When it helps

  • Checking a value against a published checksum.
  • Creating stable cache keys.
  • Teaching how small changes alter a digest.

Questions

Should I hash passwords with SHA-256?

No. Password storage needs a slow, salted algorithm such as Argon2id or bcrypt. SHA hashes are fast by design.

Why is MD5 not offered?

MD5 is broken for collision resistance and is not part of Web Crypto. SHA-256 is the sensible default.

Is SHA-1 safe?

Not for signatures or security decisions; collisions have been demonstrated. It is included for compatibility checks only.
