200 private, in-browser tools
This website: two hundred utilities for developers, students, engineers and small businesses that process files on your own device.
The problem
Most free online tools upload your files to someone else’s server and are wrapped in heavy ads. Many people do not realise their contracts and photos leave their device.
Approach
- Every tool runs in the browser; PDFs, images and text never leave the device.
- A single optional PHP endpoint, hardened against SSRF, fetches public HTTP headers for one tool.
- Each category’s code loads only on its own tool pages.
Architecture
- Static Astro site deployable to any shared host.
- Tool logic in plain TypeScript modules with unit tests; Playwright drives a real browser through all 200 tools.
- pdf-lib for PDF work, Canvas for images, Web Crypto for hashing and randomness.
Challenges
- Keeping 200 tools fast without loading two hundred tools’ worth of JavaScript.
- Making a server-side URL fetcher safe on shared hosting.
