    What it does

Optical character recognition turns a picture of text into text you can copy. It works best on clear, straight, well lit images with dark text on a light background. The recognition engine (about 5 MB) downloads the first time you use it.

    How to use it

    1. Choose a clear image of printed text.
    2. Press Extract text and wait a few seconds.
    3. Copy or download the text and check it for errors.

    Example

The example generates a small sample file in your browser and runs the tool on it. Select Try an example above to see it.

    When it helps

    • Copying text from screenshots.
    • Digitising printed handouts.
    • Getting text out of scanned PDFs (convert to JPG first).
