What it does

Browsers apply gain control and microphones vary, so this meter measures relative loudness in dBFS (decibels below full scale). It is ideal for comparing rooms or noise over time, not for legal noise measurements.

How to use it

  1. Press Start and allow microphone access.
  2. Watch the live level, peak and average.
  3. Reset to start a new measurement.

When it helps

  • Comparing how loud two rooms are.
  • Checking if a fan got louder.
  • Classroom noise monitoring.

Questions

Why not real decibels (dB SPL)?

SPL needs a calibrated microphone. Phone and laptop microphones are not calibrated and browsers process the signal.

Is audio recorded?

No. Only the level is computed, many times per second.
