What it does

Base64 turns bytes into plain ASCII so they survive email, URLs and JSON. This tool encodes text as UTF-8 first, so non-English characters round trip correctly, and it accepts both standard and URL-safe alphabets when decoding.

How to use it

  1. Choose encode or decode.
  2. Paste the text or Base64 string.
  3. The result updates as you type; copy it when ready.

When it helps

  • Reading the contents of a Basic Auth header.
  • Embedding small strings in environment variables.
  • Decoding Base64URL segments from tokens.

Questions

Is Base64 encryption?

No. Anyone can decode it. Use it for transport, never to hide secrets.

What is URL-safe Base64?

It swaps the plus and slash characters for minus and underscore, and usually drops the = padding, so the value can be used in URLs and file names.
